I agree, I love CCK ! - great people, and a huge selection of kayaks. I've rented by myself before: they just want to make sure you know what you're doing.

I second this, Outback Adventures is a great shop, they have another shop in San Jose. The staff has alot of knowledge and are very friendly. They have some great tours too. Check them out.

I can't recommend California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland ( www.calkayak.com ) highly enough. I took their Basic Sea Kayaking class in the Oakland Estuary and Sea Kayaking II at their Half Moon Bay location. They primarily stock P&H and Current Designs kayaks. They have a huge selection of all kinds of boats, including used and rental sea kayaks.

Yes they do. Kayak Connection for sure does, I am sure Monterey Bay Kayaks since they are right next door do as well. I have been many times solo and it's rewarding and peaceful. check out this website: http://www.kayakconnection.com/

Julia,

I just stopped by a kayak rental shop in Marin yesterday after passing by it many times a week wanting to.
Its located off Sir Francis Drake, right next to on / off ramps to what MAY be I 101 freeway? I may be wrong about what freeway that its next to. But its also very close to a Ferry stop.

Their name is Outback Adventures, located at
12 E. Sir Francis Drake Bldv,
Larkspur, Ca. 94939
(415) 461-2222

They apparently to one time rentals for single people as well, that you can take a kayak onto the area around there for hour or longer.
Their website is
http:www.outbackadventures.com

I will probably attend one of their into classes and rent kayaks to try them out, and for pure pleasure of it, sometime soon myself as ive been longing to get onto the water as such.
Hope that helps.?

back again on kayak rental. I could off course check the respective homepages, but this seems like an a lot more social way of doing it :)

Do these companies let a single person rent a kayak for a solo trip? I had problems in NZ a year ago renting alone (it proved beeing impossible and I had to change my plans completely, however the Queen Charlotte Track was quite a nice experience too) and do not want to get into the same situation again.

Thanks for advice.

Alan, Elaine, thanks for your advice!

This seems awsome - wildlife, channels AND good for a date :)
I'm really looking forward to the quiet of the wild as a nice ending of a vacation which starts with a visit to Black Rock City...

Thanks!

I was just going to post this. Kayak Connection is excellent. You can take groups there as well as singles. They have been wonderful to me and I even bought my kayak from them a few years ago. The wildlife is awesome and there are channels to explore. Make sure you go at high tide if you want to explore the channels. Great place to take a date too. And then reward yourself at Phil's Fish Market in town for some great seafood.!!

You won't be disappointed.

Hi Julia,

You could try either Monterey Bay Kayaks or Kayak Connection (I've used both):
http://www.montereybaykayaks.com/
http://www.kayakconnection.com/

They're both in Moss Landing (at Elkhorn Slough) in Monterey. I'd definitely recommend you check out Elkhorn Slough - it's a wildlife preserve with huge numbers of sea otters, pelicans, and other critters. I was there last Sept for the first time & definitely plan to go back!

If you just want to paddle along the coast, Kayak Connection also has a location in Santa Cruz - I think the water's a bit calmer there, though there isn't as much wildlife.
